The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, high-level disinfection, assembly, sterilization, and distribution of clean and sterile surgical instruments, trays, and pans. This includes inspecting instruments, operating sterilizers, performing maintenance, and ensuring sterility through quality assurance checks and documentation. The role also involves receiving and storing supplies, maintaining inventory, and assisting with surgical supply orders.

Responsibilities:
- Inspect, assemble, package, and sterilize surgical instrument pans, procedural trays, technical equipment, and surgical case carts.
- Operate steam sterilizers, ensuring proper time, pressure, and temperature levels.
- Perform simple maintenance of sterilizers, such as cleaning drain baskets.
- Prepare cultures, review test packs, interpret results, and complete required documentation to assure sterility.
- Check and adjust medical equipment to ensure it operates according to specifications.
- Decontaminate surgical instruments and equipment following established procedures.
- Set up decontamination equipment, clean and disinfect equipment and work area, and handle infectious waste according to protocol.
- Receive and store supplies, check stock against requisitions, document stock received, and report discrepancies.
- Document and fill orders for surgical supplies for patient care areas and deliver supplies when warranted.
- Maintain records of equipment inventory use, frequency of servicing, and equipment needing repair.
- Perform daily quality assurance checks on stock levels, sterility dates, and accuracy of procedure carts.
- Maintain critical documentation such as biologicals and sterilizer load sheets.
- Answer unit phone and directs calls accordingly.
- Perform data entry into electronic medical database systems. Documents patient care and related duties appropriately.
- Perform selected patient registration activities.
- Coordinates equipment/supply needs. Notifies appropriate department of equipment malfunction.
- Perform any other related duties (e.g., clerical, technical duties) as assigned.
Required Skills & Certifications:
- Certified Sterile Processor (HSPA or CBSPD)
- BLS (American Heart Association ONLY)
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as a Sterile Processing Technician
- Large hospital experience (500+ beds)
- Travel experience (6 months)
- Two professional references from the last two assignments
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
- Level 1 trauma center experience
- Certified Endoscope Reprocessor (CER Cert)
- Orthopedic tray experience
Special Considerations:
- Weekends as needed.
Scheduling:
- Monday Friday Evenings: 3pm 11:30pm EST
- 40 hours/week
